Model of the week: Vlada Roslyakova

Vlada Roslyakova is a russian model, she's one of my favorite and in my eyes her pictures can do no wrong. She's also considered to be one of the models to have a baby doll-esque face.

She has worked for Nina Ricci, Moschino Cheap & Chic, Vera Wang Bridal, Burberry Blue Label, Hermès, Miss Sixty, MaxMara, Christian Lacroix, Dolce & Gabbana, Jill Stuart, DKNY, Daks Japan, Karl Lagerfeld, and Lacoste.
It's usual to see her in Fashion Week runways though some time ago she was one of the models that could have missed Milan's Fashion Week due to being underweight, however she stated that she was naturally thin and that she could eat a lot and not gain a pound, whether that's true or not it's for you to discuss.

She's known to be a lovely person and a goof backstage, as well as her trademark walk on the runway.

Curious fact: Her real name's Elena but she changed it to Vlada so she wouldn't be confused with another model.

Photographer of the Month: Irving Penn.

He was a master of photography but sadly he passed away last October, he is remembered through the incredible body of work he left behind.
He is most famous for his feminine chic and glamour photography, but what i like the most about his work is how he uses the black and white concept so perfectly, and also the fact that his work is ethereal and that it is classical.

Milly's song of the week.

Every once in a while i have a week where i just listen to one song over and over and over again.
This week's song is Watcha Say, one of the biggest hits of the moment and i just simply love this song.

If you were wondering the person who sings the "Watcha say" part is the very talented Imogen Heap.

At last!

Lilly and i should be ashamed because we totally abandoned our blog, but we promise to try to keep this updated.

Anyway, about a month or so we had our school play. It was based on Alice in Wonderland and our group was the Cheshire Cat. After months of hard work and endless fights about random things we finally pulled it off and i'm quite proud of the outcome.
If i'm able to get a video i promise i'll post it.

Isn't our costume cute? haha i love it.

And last but not least i absolutely love this song, but i can't help but like the acoustic version just a little more.

Photographer of the month: Dane Shitagi

Hi! Yes, I know, again, I've forgotten about the blog, but let me tell you that while everyone's on vacation, Milly and I got to study. Why? Well, just because our school is different, and our long vacations are on December.

I started dancing ballet just a while ago, and I'm extremely happy. I can't wait 'til is ballet's class day!

So I was searching ballet stuff on Google and after looking a lot of things, I finally saw this amazing website http://www.daneshitagi.com/index.html
It was from Dane Shitagi, who is photographer originally from Honolulu, and I think every picture is very inspiring. This project is called New York Ballerina Project.
You can see the contrast of the grace and poise of the ballerinas, and a city full of lights and traffic, etc.
That's why he's our photographer of the month!

Take a look yourself.

Who is she!?

Oh! Today I went to the mall with a friend and I saw so many cute things in Zara and Naf-Naf... I need to win the lottery so I can buy everything I saw today! Anyway...

Remember her? The one in the yellow dress? On Teen Vogue's February 2008 cover?

Karlie Kloss, Chanel Iman, Ali Michael. Teen Vogue February/08

Of course we all recognize Ali Michael and Chanel Iman, but honestly, I never saw much things about this girl, who happens to be Karlie Kloss, until now that I know who she is!
Come on, she's my age, she's only 16! ... And also she's a ballet dancer.

She signed with NEXT Model Management in January 2008 and she has been in advertisement for Nina Ricci, GAP, among others.
Karlie Kloss has worked with Marc Jacobs, Gucci, Valentino, Versace and, yes Milly, your favorite, Zac Posen.

You also might rembember her because she fell during a Prada fashion show Milan Fashion Week, but I mean, everyone would probably fall with those things!

Model of the Week: Sasha Pivarova

Sasha Pivovarova is a Russian beauty, with crystal blue eyes and a flawless elfin face, who has become one of the "it" girls in the fashion industry.

Her career began when photographer, and husband, Igor Vishnyakov took pictures of her and sent them to IMG (modeling angency).
She currently lives in Brooklyn and in her spare time she enjoys painting and drawing, in fact her paintings have been displayed in galleries and even in French Vogue.

She has worked for all the high names in the fashion industry like Carolina Herrera, Prada, Calvin Klein, Luella, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors, Zac Posen (one of my favorites disigner),Proenza Schouler, Chanel, Narciso Rodriguez among others, making her one of the few "true" supermodels.

French Invasion!

Oh, oh! I feel like I abandoned the blog! A month without any post...Anyway.

I found this great French band called Les Plastiscines, but they perfrom mostly in English and have cool songs like Mr. Driver, Shake or Barcelona. They're Katty Besnard (singer and guitar), Marine Neuilly (guitar) and Louise Basilien (bass).

Their genre is kind of Indie rock/pop, and personally, I think they have an amazing style and, believe me, these girls can rock!
They're in the Nylon Summer Tour 2009, and you can visit their MySpace (http://www.myspace.com/plastiscine) to check out dates!

Here's the video of Shake/Mr. Driver!

Newest Annie Leibovitz!

I meant to post this a long time ago, but sometimes i can have the memory of an hairhead and i totally forgot to do so. But yeah, this is the newest Annie Leibovitz shoot where Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron portray princess Aurora and Prince Philippe from the Sleeping Beauty.
Sleeping Beauty is my favorite Disney Classical film and i'm not too sure if this picture portrays the movie well, the main issue is that Vanessa doesn't look a bit like Aurora, but nonetheless Annie is a genious when it comes to this kind of pictures. This picture also reminds me more of Romeo and Juliette than the Sleeping Beauty but this is still a stunning picture.

I just simply love this commercial, the idea of it by itself is great but the commercial is even greater because they're singing Hey Judy by the Beatles, and who doesn't love the Beatles?
Whoever is responsible for this is a genius!

Quote of the Day!

I adore Vivien....she was and still is one of the most beautiful and graceful actress ever.

Photographer of the Month!

As Milly said in her post about Alice in Wonderland by Annie Leibovitz (Feb 2009), this woman is definetly a genious when is comes to fairytale photoshoots.
I started searching her Disney photographs, and I found amazing pictures from all time stories like Peter Pan, The Wizard of Oz, Cinderella, among others!

I wanted to see more and more, because you can almost feel everything is real.
The models and landscapes and clothes and make up and everything is gorgeous!

I could post all the photos of that photoshoot, but it'd take a lot of time!
Meanwhile enjoy my favourites! :]

Quote of the Day!

I was reading quotes, and I found this one, that made me think about all the great styles that we see each day, and we don't even notice, or maybe we do.
There're lots of girls and boys with amazing styles and they might not be models but, some of them, should be on magazines!
So here's the quote and some pictures! Enjoy!

Midday Sun!

I wasn't inspired at all, so I started asking for inspiration, and someone told me "well, look at the sun in midday" And I thought that was a great idea, (in some kind of way), then he told me I'd get blind, but of course, I wasn't thinking about looking at the sun in midday, I just thought of summer trends, which is one step closer everyday!
Personally, I prefeer Winter, I don't know why, but I absolutely love a sunny day to be in the pool or beach with your friends and stuff...

Oh my, what I love about this season? Everything is so colorful everyone seems to be happy and ejoying their vacations!

So here are some pictures from Teen vogue (May 2008) which made me think of "looking at the sun in midday". Enjoy!

Model Of the Week: Coco Rocha

This Canadian beauty was born in Toronto, but when she was very little she moved to British Columbia. She was discovered by agent Charles Stuart when she was just 14, while she was competing in an Irish dance Competition.

Coco met fashion photographer Steven Meisel in February 2006. Soon, she was featured in an editorial with the lovely Gemma Ward and Amanda Moore. That editorial kickstarted her career, landing her the cover of the February 2006 issue of Vogue Italy.

One of her most memorable moments was during Jean Paul Gaultier's Scottish Highlands inspired Fall/Winter 2007 show, where she opened the show by Irish Dancing down the runway, American Vogue dubbed this the "Coco Moment". I absolutely loved it, it reminded me that there are still "supermodels" in the fashion industry.

She has been on the covers of Vogue, Flare, Fashion, Numéro, French, W, Harper's Bazaar, Dazed & Confused, one of my favorites i-D magazine, Times Style & Design, among others.

Since her debut in 2006 she has been the face of lots of advertising campaigns such as American Manhasset, Balenciaga, Chanel, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Lanvin, The Gap, Tommy Hilfiger and Yves Saint Laurent.

There are two main reasons of why i love her, the first one is her high-fashion looks...there's no one that looks like Coco, the second one is that she is one of the very few models that have spoken out against the eating disorders and the whole anorexia look in the fashion industry

Book Of the Month: Tess of the d'Urbevilles.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a novel by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1891. Though now considered a great classic of English Literature, the book received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual costumes of Hardy's day.

I simply loved Tess, it has been one of the best novel's I have ever read. The allusions that Hardy creates in the novel, provide a symbolic meaning toward life and toward the theme of "original sin." The life story of Tess captivates the reader's attention and anxiousness to find out what "fate" Hardy has prepared for her and Angel. One of the reasons I really enjoyed this novel was because of the unexpecting ending of Tess, I was completely unprepared for this. Further, the theme of "fate" and "coincidence" causes the reader to reflect upon their own life and gaze upon those "odd coincidences," that perhaps were no coincidence at all, but part of our unchanging "fate". Overall it's a lovely book, deffinitely worth reading.

Synopsis:
The downtrodden Durbeyfields are surprised to learn of their distinguished ancestry as descendents of the wealthy and now extinct d'Urberville family. News that a woman with the d'Urberville name lives nearby inspires the Durbeyfields to send their daughter Tess to investigate. Tess meets handsome Alec d'Urberville, who lives on the estate with his mother. Tess is invited to take a job on the property. Alec seduces Tess with sweet words and lavish promises, but the situation soon takes a horrific turn, leaving Tess devastated and ashamed. Tess finds work on a dairy farm, where she makes three good friends, Marion, Izz and Retty. While there, Tess coincidentally meets someone she's previously only seen from afar, Angel Clare. Over a hot summer, Angel and Tess fall in love. But as her attraction deepens, Tess is torn between hope and fear. Should she confess her past to Angel, or will her honesty ruin her chances for a happy life?

Tea Party!

I was thinking on having a little all-girl gathering, so I told to myself: "Why not a cute, girly, tea party?"... It sounded cool, so I'm planning it, very floral, with cupcakes, little sandwiches and everything!
I asked at Teen Vogue's forum, and they came up with excellent ideas such as rococo decoration, mirrors, Alice in Wonderland, Marie Antoinette and lots of fun stuff!
I will let you know how everything ends up, but here I post some inspiration pictures!!!
Have a great weekend!
Oh! and Milly, get ready, you'll be able to wear that lovely yellow ballet-like dress I love, you bought! haha! :]

Lisa Fonssagrives: The first supermodel.

Lisa Fonssagrives was a Model, dancer, fashion designer, photographer and sculptor. She brought qualities from each of these talents to her modeling creating a persona at once earthly and larger than life.
She is considered by many to be the world's first supermodel(despite Janice Dickinson's claim to be the very first, it is Lisa who can claim that title) and none have surpassed her number of Vogue covers alone. Very little is known about this Swedish beauty, though her image graced the cover of every fashion magazine during the 1930s, 40s and 50s from Town and Country, Life, Vogue to the original Vanity Fair.
She was photographed by George Hoyningen-Huene, Man Ray, Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, George Platt-Lynes, Richard Avedon, Edgar de Evia, not to mention both of her husbands, Fernand Fonssagrives and Irving Penn.
She is known to have described herself as simply a "good clothes hanger." She was so much more. She has been described as 'the highest paid, highest praised, high fashion model in the business'.
She was both muse and inspiration to the cream of fashion photographers with her seventeen inch waistline. Married first to Parisian photographer Fernand Fonssagrives in 1935 they divorced and in 1950 she married Irving Penn.
She died at the age of 81 surrounded by the fame and glamour that she always had through her life.

"It is always the dress, it is never, never the girl. I am just a good clothes hanger"- Lisa Fonssagrives.

Model of The Week: Gemma Ward

Gemma ward is an australian model and actress.
When she was just sixteen she appeared in American Vogue as a fashion "It Girl", the youngest model that has been listed into Vogue. To date Ward's clients have included Yves Saint-Laurent, Valentino, Swarovski, Rochas, Prasa, Louis Vuitton, Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sander, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Hermès, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Burberry and Balenciaga and, altogether, Ward has appeared on 30 covers of Vogue magazine worldwide. She appeared on the first issue of Vogue India, and she was the first-ever cover of Vogue China.
Paul Cavaco(creative director of Allure) says: "We went through a period that was very va-va-voom, but now the pendulum has swung back. Gemma is ethereal, not earthy", and i totally agree with him. Gemma is one of a kind in the fashion world, she was the one that started the whole "baby doll or alien models" look and is now one of the most important models out there.
But despite her amazing work she has had some issues with her weight. At first people complained about her weight because she was too skinny, but now she has gained some weight and people are saying that she's too fat to be a model, which is very ridiculous if you ask me.

Right now Gemma is taking a break from modeling and is focusing on her acting career, some say she has taken a break after Heath Ledger's death, who was a good friend of her and rumored lover.
Gemma is my favorite doll faced model, i think she is divine.

Book of the month: Into The Wild

Yes, Milly will see this and laugh!
I am kind of obssessed With Chris McCandless' story. He was 22 years old when, after graduating, gave all his money to charity and went "into the wild" looking for the real meaning of life, happiness and truth.
He died 2 years after traveling all USA's west, in Alaska.
The people who knew him say that he was amazing, and also say that he was very smart.
Some other people just say that he was naive, and he didn't know anything about nature, and that he's just one of thousands of travelers that go all over USA.

Personally, I admire him, and he inspires me, because he gave up to everything he had, and started changing the life of everyone he knew, and his.

I haven't seen the movie, yet, I'm waiting until I finish the book.
If you haven't either, read the book first, because there're more stories about men like him, who decided to have a wild life. This is a book by Jon Krakauer and I highly recomend it!
If you have any comments or suggestions etc, please feel free to post it!
