Book Of the Month: Tess of the d'Urbevilles.

Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a novel by Thomas Hardy, first published in 1891. Though now considered a great classic of English Literature, the book received mixed reviews when it first appeared, in part because it challenged the sexual costumes of Hardy's day.

I simply loved Tess, it has been one of the best novel's I have ever read. The allusions that Hardy creates in the novel, provide a symbolic meaning toward life and toward the theme of "original sin." The life story of Tess captivates the reader's attention and anxiousness to find out what "fate" Hardy has prepared for her and Angel. One of the reasons I really enjoyed this novel was because of the unexpecting ending of Tess, I was completely unprepared for this. Further, the theme of "fate" and "coincidence" causes the reader to reflect upon their own life and gaze upon those "odd coincidences," that perhaps were no coincidence at all, but part of our unchanging "fate". Overall it's a lovely book, deffinitely worth reading.

Synopsis:
The downtrodden Durbeyfields are surprised to learn of their distinguished ancestry as descendents of the wealthy and now extinct d'Urberville family. News that a woman with the d'Urberville name lives nearby inspires the Durbeyfields to send their daughter Tess to investigate. Tess meets handsome Alec d'Urberville, who lives on the estate with his mother. Tess is invited to take a job on the property. Alec seduces Tess with sweet words and lavish promises, but the situation soon takes a horrific turn, leaving Tess devastated and ashamed. Tess finds work on a dairy farm, where she makes three good friends, Marion, Izz and Retty. While there, Tess coincidentally meets someone she's previously only seen from afar, Angel Clare. Over a hot summer, Angel and Tess fall in love. But as her attraction deepens, Tess is torn between hope and fear. Should she confess her past to Angel, or will her honesty ruin her chances for a happy life?

Tea Party!

I was thinking on having a little all-girl gathering, so I told to myself: "Why not a cute, girly, tea party?"... It sounded cool, so I'm planning it, very floral, with cupcakes, little sandwiches and everything!
I asked at Teen Vogue's forum, and they came up with excellent ideas such as rococo decoration, mirrors, Alice in Wonderland, Marie Antoinette and lots of fun stuff!
I will let you know how everything ends up, but here I post some inspiration pictures!!!
Have a great weekend!
Oh! and Milly, get ready, you'll be able to wear that lovely yellow ballet-like dress I love, you bought! haha! :]

Lisa Fonssagrives: The first supermodel.

Lisa Fonssagrives was a Model, dancer, fashion designer, photographer and sculptor. She brought qualities from each of these talents to her modeling creating a persona at once earthly and larger than life.
She is considered by many to be the world's first supermodel(despite Janice Dickinson's claim to be the very first, it is Lisa who can claim that title) and none have surpassed her number of Vogue covers alone. Very little is known about this Swedish beauty, though her image graced the cover of every fashion magazine during the 1930s, 40s and 50s from Town and Country, Life, Vogue to the original Vanity Fair.
She was photographed by George Hoyningen-Huene, Man Ray, Horst, Erwin Blumenfeld, George Platt-Lynes, Richard Avedon, Edgar de Evia, not to mention both of her husbands, Fernand Fonssagrives and Irving Penn.
She is known to have described herself as simply a "good clothes hanger." She was so much more. She has been described as 'the highest paid, highest praised, high fashion model in the business'.
She was both muse and inspiration to the cream of fashion photographers with her seventeen inch waistline. Married first to Parisian photographer Fernand Fonssagrives in 1935 they divorced and in 1950 she married Irving Penn.
She died at the age of 81 surrounded by the fame and glamour that she always had through her life.

"It is always the dress, it is never, never the girl. I am just a good clothes hanger"- Lisa Fonssagrives.

Model of The Week: Gemma Ward

Gemma ward is an australian model and actress.
When she was just sixteen she appeared in American Vogue as a fashion "It Girl", the youngest model that has been listed into Vogue. To date Ward's clients have included Yves Saint-Laurent, Valentino, Swarovski, Rochas, Prasa, Louis Vuitton, Karl Lagerfeld, Jil Sander, Jean-Paul Gaultier, Hermès, Dolce & Gabbana, Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, Burberry and Balenciaga and, altogether, Ward has appeared on 30 covers of Vogue magazine worldwide. She appeared on the first issue of Vogue India, and she was the first-ever cover of Vogue China.
Paul Cavaco(creative director of Allure) says: "We went through a period that was very va-va-voom, but now the pendulum has swung back. Gemma is ethereal, not earthy", and i totally agree with him. Gemma is one of a kind in the fashion world, she was the one that started the whole "baby doll or alien models" look and is now one of the most important models out there.
But despite her amazing work she has had some issues with her weight. At first people complained about her weight because she was too skinny, but now she has gained some weight and people are saying that she's too fat to be a model, which is very ridiculous if you ask me.

Right now Gemma is taking a break from modeling and is focusing on her acting career, some say she has taken a break after Heath Ledger's death, who was a good friend of her and rumored lover.
Gemma is my favorite doll faced model, i think she is divine.

Book of the month: Into The Wild

Yes, Milly will see this and laugh!
I am kind of obssessed With Chris McCandless' story. He was 22 years old when, after graduating, gave all his money to charity and went "into the wild" looking for the real meaning of life, happiness and truth.
He died 2 years after traveling all USA's west, in Alaska.
The people who knew him say that he was amazing, and also say that he was very smart.
Some other people just say that he was naive, and he didn't know anything about nature, and that he's just one of thousands of travelers that go all over USA.

Personally, I admire him, and he inspires me, because he gave up to everything he had, and started changing the life of everyone he knew, and his.

I haven't seen the movie, yet, I'm waiting until I finish the book.
If you haven't either, read the book first, because there're more stories about men like him, who decided to have a wild life. This is a book by Jon Krakauer and I highly recomend it!
If you have any comments or suggestions etc, please feel free to post it!
